Q46 They sometimes travel more than sixty miles to find food or water, and ar...
They sometimes travel more than sixty miles to find food or water, and are very good at working out where other elephants are—even when they are out of sight.
1They sometimes travel more than sixty miles to find food or water,
more than sixty miles
- to find food or water
2and are very good at working out where other elephants are—even when they are out of sight.
- and 连接 travel... 和 are very good at...
- working out 后接 where 引导的宾语从句,where 在从句中表示地点。
- even when they are out of sight 中的 they 指 other elephants,中文还原指代,译为“即使其他大象不在视线之内”。
Q47 The researchers are convinced that the elephants always know precisely wh...
The researchers are convinced that the elephants always know precisely where they are in relation to all the resources they need, and can therefore take shortcuts, as well as following familiar routes.
1The researchers are convinced that the elephants always know precisely
- be convinced that...
2where they are in relation to all the resources they need,
3and can therefore take shortcuts, as well as following familiar routes.
- and 后省略了共同主语 the elephants,并将 can take...
- A as well as B 在这里把 take shortcuts 与 following familiar routes 并列,并侧重前面的 A。
Q48 One possibility was that they merely used their eyes and tried out the pl...
One possibility was that they merely used their eyes and tried out the plants they found, but that would probably result in a lot of wasted time and energy, not least because their eyesight is actually not very good.
1One possibility was that they merely used their eyes and tried out the plants they found,
- One possibility was that...
- they 回指 elephants。used their eyes 和 tried out...
2but that would probably result in a lot of wasted time and energy,
- result in a lot of wasted time and energy
3not least because their eyesight is actually not very good.
- their 回指 elephants。
Q49 The volatile chemicals produced by plants can be carried a long way, and...
The volatile chemicals produced by plants can be carried a long way, and they are very characteristic: Each plant or tree has its own particular odor signature.
1The volatile chemicals produced by plants can be carried a long way,
2and they are very characteristic: Each plant or tree has its own particular odor signature.
Each plant or tree has...
Q50 The experiment showed that elephants may well use smell to identify patch...
The experiment showed that elephants may well use smell to identify patches of trees that are good to eat, and secondly to assess the quality of the trees within each patch.
1The experiment showed that elephants may well use smell
2to identify patches of trees that are good to eat,
- to identify...
- that are good to eat
3and secondly to assess the quality of the trees within each patch.
- and 连接 to identify... 和 to assess...
- the quality of the trees within each patch 包含两层修饰:within each patch 后置修饰 trees, the quality of the trees 表示“树木的品质”。
